From Still Waters was a duo exhibition featuring work of Hayden Brooks and Fran Kula. The exhibition was held at the Pratt Photo Gallery and ran from October 9th-27th, 2023
In From Still Waters, Francesca Kula’s work is an exploration of temporality and impermanence. Influenced often by existentialist theory and philosophy, Kula is interested in exploring stages of Being; before and after becoming conscious of ourselves moving through space, often trying to figure out how to move forward and make meaning in a disillusioned sense of the world. This project work explores the ways in which we develop and create meaning in our lives after coming to terms with this knowledge; that time is constant and that we will eventually no longer be here. Kula’s work is an investigation of the passage of time and memory through portraiture and landscape. Their work is often focused around human intervention with the landscape and how landscapes, places and nature have their own ambiguity. They often feel that every time they enter a space, it will never be the same when they return again and try to emulate that feeling in their work. Thinking about how these ideas affect how we look at our past, how do we form memories from experiences and how do tangible things create a concrete way of formalizing our reality?
