There is a heaven below the earth is a body of work that is rooted in the landscape and preservation of time. Through the process of analog image making, Kula interrogates the traditional history of the medium. They are interested in the ways that photography can become a construction of reality. Through their process of photographing multiple landscapes and figures, Kula insists that these photographs were all made in one setting or place– locations are made ambiguous by cutting off horizon lines and obfuscating figures faces, thus creating a sense of wholistic dislocation which ultimately unites this body of work into a singular “place”– allowing one to discover a imagined location through an act of dislocation.

Kula searches for ways in which photography can intersect as a depiction of the world and how it can serve as their way to create something entirely fictional. Drawing from personal experiences of childhood and feelings of nostalgia, they create a greater edenic landscape where the viewer can depart from. In photographs of their family home, Kula explores how the past informs their present journey and reality. There is a heaven below the earth is an overall investigation of memory and human nature; It is a reflection into the innate as to why there is a desire to preserve the world in front of us.
